Everyone's Grandfather

Lyrics & tune Valerie Housden

The year was nineteen sixty-three, so many things took place:
A much loved president was shot, a woman flew in space,
Two curious school teachers followed an unearthly child home.
Little did they realise how far they both would roam.

No, Susan! Our money's not decimal! Was she stupid? Did she forget:
Twelve pence to one shilling? Seventy-one still far ahead yet.
And she was your granddaughter, you both lived in a junkyard,
hidden somewhat out of the way. Finding it was hard.

You were
everyone's grandfather, our favourite grandfather,
just a little bit tetchy, and oh, so very smart.
Your life was an adventure, the dangers all were real,
But you always found the answer, that's how you won our hearts.

Your home just a police box as in Dixon of Dock Greent.
I'd pass some on my way to school, they were everywhere to be seen.
When eventually Susan left you, you somehow kept her shoe.
Do you still have that memento in your blue box, hidden from view?

You were
everyone's grandfather, our favourite grandfather,
just a little bit tetchy, and oh, so very smart.
Your life was an adventure, the dangers all were real,
But you always found the answer, that's how you won our hearts.

You fought so many monsters, saved the universe once or twice,
aided by your companions, some of whom were rather nice.
Eleven regenerations, you fought in the great Time War.
And ever the survivor, you're back travelling once more.

My little sister's a grandmother, I'm great aunt five times over,
The police box a museum piece, you're still an inter-dimensional rover.
You keep getting ever younger, that really isn't fair!
But still you remain a hero for children everywhere.

For

everyone's grandfather's now our favourite mad uncle,
More than a little bit crazy, but still so very smart.
Your life's one big adventure, the dangers still very real,
But you always find the answer, that's how you've won our hearts.

Yes, everyone's grandfather can still win children's hearts.
